Talking about your job in Dutch means dropping an article English insists on: Ik werk als docent, not 'as a teacher'. The preposition after werken also shifts depending on whether you name the employer, the role or the field.

Dutch

Ik werk als docent. Zij werkt als arts.

English

I work as a teacher. She works as a doctor.

English requires 'a' before a profession: 'as a teacher'. Dutch drops the article after als when stating a role or function: als docent, als vrijwilliger, als manager. The same happens with zijn in some fixed uses — Hij is arts is normal alongside Hij is een arts, with the article-less version sounding more neutral.

werken bij, voor, aan, in — four different relationships

Ik werk bij een bank, voor een klant, aan een project, in de zorg.

English

I work at a bank, for a client, on a project, in healthcare.

bij names the employer, voor names who benefits, aan names the task, in names the sector. English overlaps these ('work at', 'work for') more loosely. Saying werken voor een bank is not wrong but suggests you are contracted to it rather than employed by it, so the preposition carries real information about your position.

solliciteren op and the vocabulary of applying

Ik heb op die vacature gesolliciteerd.

English

I applied for that vacancy.

solliciteren takes op for the position applied for and bij for the organization: solliciteren op een functie bij een bedrijf. The related noun de sollicitatie covers the application and the interview alike, with het sollicitatiegesprek naming the interview specifically. Note the whole family is built from a Latin root that English uses very differently, so 'solicit' is a false friend to avoid.
