Lesson 12A1

Negation

നിഷേധം

Malayalam negates a sentence with one word, ഇല്ല, no matter what kind of verb it's attached to. English splits negation into two different patterns depending on the verb.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

Two negation patterns, not one

English

I don't eat (ordinary verb) vs. I am not hungry / I can't go (to be, modals)

Malayalam

ഇല്ല covers every case — എനിക്ക് വിശപ്പ് ഇല്ല, എനിക്ക് പോകാൻ കഴിയില്ല, ഞാൻ കഴിക്കുന്നില്ല

Ordinary English verbs need the 'do' helper to negate (I don't eat), while 'to be' and modal verbs negate by simply adding 'not' directly after themselves (I am not, I can't). Which pattern applies depends entirely on the verb type — a distinction Malayalam doesn't make, since ഇല്ല attaches the same way regardless of what's being negated.

'No' answers a question; 'not' negates a sentence

English

"Do you like it?" "No." vs. "I do not like it."

Malayalam

ഇല്ല does both jobs — it can stand alone as an answer or attach inside a sentence

English uses two different words for these two roles: 'no' as a standalone answer, 'not' built into a sentence. Malayalam's ഇല്ല already covers both roles at once (you saw it used this way back in the greetings lesson), so watch for the moment English splits that single idea into two separate words.
