Advanced Discourse Connectors

उन्नत प्रवचन संयोजक

Formal Hindi essays and reports lean on a similar small connector set — हालाँकि, फिर भी, फलस्वरूप — so the register instinct transfers directly; what needs care is that a few French connectors are false friends or split hairs that Hindi, like English, collapses into fewer words.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

cependant / néanmoins / en revanche: three flavors of 'however' — Hindi's जबकि marks the en revanche flavor specifically

French

Le projet est ambitieux ; cependant, le budget reste limité. (The project is ambitious; however, the budget remains limited.)

Hindi

परियोजना महत्वाकांक्षी है; फिर भी, बजट सीमित है।

cependant and néanmoins both mean 'however/nevertheless' and are largely interchangeable in formal writing, while en revanche leans more toward a direct two-way contrast — closer to Hindi's जबकि ('whereas'), often pairing two comparable things going in opposite directions: वह गणित में अच्छा है; जबकि, वह भाषाओं में कमज़ोर है ('he's good at maths, whereas he's weak in languages'). All three sit above simple लेकिन ('but') in formality, mirroring how French's cependant/néanmoins outrank plain mais — लेकिन or फिर भी is what you'd actually hear in casual Hindi conversation.

or: the argumentative pivot, not the disjunction — Hindi's अब can play a related pivoting role, without the false-friend trap

French

Tous les employés doivent signer. Or, Marc a refusé. (All employees must sign. Now, Marc refused.)

Hindi

सभी कर्मचारियों को हस्ताक्षर करना ज़रूरी है। अब, मार्क ने मना कर दिया।

or (no accent — not to be confused with l'or meaning 'gold') is a formal logical connector meaning roughly 'now' or 'and yet' — it introduces a new fact that sets up the next step of an argument, classically seen in syllogisms: Tous les hommes sont mortels. Or, Socrate est un homme. Donc... Hindi's अब ('now') can do a related job in formal argumentative writing, pivoting to a new premise the same way. Because French or is spelled exactly like the English disjunction 'or,' this is one of the most treacherous false friends in this course for an English speaker — but that trap is specific to English, not Hindi, since Hindi's अब carries no such misleading resemblance; coming from Hindi is actually safer ground here.

par conséquent / de ce fait: formal 'therefore' — matched by Hindi's फलस्वरूप

French

Il n'a pas révisé ; par conséquent, il a échoué. (He didn't study; consequently, he failed.)

Hindi

उसने रिवीज़न नहीं किया; फलस्वरूप, वह असफल हो गया।

par conséquent and de ce fait both mean 'consequently/as a result' and belong to written/formal register, functioning as the upgraded cousins of everyday donc ('so') and du coup (the C1 discourse-particle from earlier, casual/spoken). Hindi has the identical relationship: फलस्वरूप ('as a consequence') is the formal, written cousin of everyday तो/इसलिए — exactly the same register split. Matching connector formality to the rest of your sentence is part of what makes formal French writing sound native rather than translated, and it's a skill you already practice in Hindi by choosing फलस्वरूप over तो in an essay.
