Colors agree with the noun's gender — a habit Hindi already has

Most French color adjectives add -e for feminine nouns, exactly like other regular adjectives: bleu → bleue, vert → verte, noir → noire. Hindi's own -आ-ending colors do the identical thing: काला/काली/काले, नीला/नीली/नीले, हरा/हरी/हरे all change to match the noun's gender and number, just like French bleu/bleue — so the underlying idea of a color word agreeing with what it describes is already familiar, you're just learning a new set of endings for it. Not every French color changes this way, though: rouge ('red'), like Hindi's लाल, stays exactly the same for both genders. A handful of French colors named directly after objects (marron 'chestnut-brown', orange) don't change at all either — an extra layer of invariant colors on top of the ones Hindi's own grammar would lead you to expect to change.
