Dates & Calendar
तारीख़ और कैलेंडर
French dates use plain counting numbers for every day of the month except the first — and Hindi does something strikingly similar, reaching for a special ordinal word only on the 1st and cardinal numbers everywhere else.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
le + cardinal number + month — except the 1st, and Hindi matches this pattern
le deux mars (March 2nd, lit. 'the two March'), but le premier janvier (January 1st)
दो मार्च (cardinal, for the 2nd) — पहली जनवरी (ordinal, only for the 1st)
French just uses the plain counting number for dates: le deux mars, le trois avril, le quinze août. The single exception is the 1st of the month, which uses the ordinal premier: le premier janvier, not le un janvier. Hindi follows almost the identical logic: दो मार्च, तीन अप्रैल, पंद्रह अगस्त all use plain cardinal numbers, but the 1st of the month switches to the ordinal पहली (feminine, agreeing with तारीख़, 'date') — पहली जनवरी, not एक जनवरी. Instead of fighting a new pattern here, you can lean directly on the Hindi habit you already have: cardinal numbers by default, with one dedicated ordinal reserved just for the first of the month.
