Hindi has its own -ing-like converb, ते हुए, attached to a verb stem to mean 'while doing' — खाते हुए ('while eating') — very close in shape to French's participe présent. But where French collapses both 'while' (simultaneity) and 'by' (manner) into the single en + -ant formula, Hindi actually keeps these apart with two different converbs, ते हुए for simultaneity and -कर for manner or sequence — so on this specific point, Hindi's own instinct pulls in the opposite direction from French's single fixed formula.

Hindi's own converb ते हुए is built just as mechanically, attaching directly to the verb stem — खा (from खाना) + ते हुए → खाते हुए. Three French verbs are irregular in this formation: être → étant, avoir → ayant, savoir → sachant; Hindi's ते हुए, by contrast, attaches uniformly to every verb stem with no irregular exceptions to memorize, one less list than French asks for here.

French collapses two different meanings — manner ('by doing') and simultaneity ('while doing') — into the single fixed formula en + -ant, using the exact same construction for both elle a appris le français en regardant des films (by watching) and il chante en conduisant (while driving). Hindi, however, keeps these apart: simultaneity uses ते हुए (गाड़ी चलाते हुए गाता है, 'sings while driving'), while manner or repeated means typically uses the -कर/-के converb, often doubled for emphasis (देख-देखकर, 'by watching again and again'). So where French merges these two ideas into one shape, Hindi's own grammar already tells them apart — meaning you'll need to actively suppress your Hindi instinct to reach for two different constructions, since French wants just the one en + -ant for both.

Dropped of en, the bare participe présent can act like an adjective in formal French, replacing a qui + verb relative clause (une personne qui parle français → une personne parlant français) — though everyday spoken French, like Hindi, more often prefers a qui-clause or a वाला-construction here (फ़्रेंच बोलने वाला व्यक्ति, literally 'French-speaking-one person', built with बोलना + वाला rather than a participle). Where French's bare participe présent used adjectivally stays invariable for most verbs (parlant, mangeant never change shape) except a handful of forms that have drifted into true agreeing adjectives (l'eau courante, des chaises pliantes, 'folding chairs'), Hindi's own parallel adjectival participle, -ता हुआ, agrees in gender and number as standard practice for every verb, not just a handful — बहता हुआ पानी (masculine) vs बहती हुई नदी ('flowing river', feminine). So where French agreement here is the rare exception, Hindi agreement is the reliable rule — don't expect that reliability to carry over; check each French -ant adjective individually.
