Double Conjunctions: soit...soit, ni...ni
ഇരട്ട സംയോജക പദങ്ങൾ: soit...soit, ni...ni
French wraps certain conjunctions around the choices or things being ruled out in a matching two-part frame — soit...soit ('either...or') and ni...ni ('neither...nor') — a structure that has no single-word Malayalam equivalent, since Malayalam usually builds the same meaning with suffixes like -ഓ and -ഉം rather than a repeated standalone word.
Grammar Comparison
വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം
soit...soit = either...or
Soit tu viens avec nous, soit tu restes ici. (Either you come with us, or you stay here)
ഒന്നുകിൽ നീ ഞങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം വരൂ, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ ഇവിടെ നിൽക്കൂ.
soit...soit presents two alternatives where one must hold, matching the spirit of Malayalam's ഒന്നുകിൽ...അല്ലെങ്കിൽ pattern — but note that French simply repeats the same word soit on both sides, unlike Malayalam which switches from ഒന്നുകിൽ to അല്ലെങ്കിൽ. soit...soit can join full clauses, verbs, or plain nouns: soit le rouge, soit le bleu ('either the red one or the blue one').
ni...ni = neither...nor (with ne on the verb)
Il n'aime ni le café ni le thé. (He likes neither coffee nor tea)
അവന് കാപ്പിയും ഇഷ്ടമല്ല, ചായയും ഇഷ്ടമല്ല.
ni...ni negates two or more things at once, but unlike the everyday ne...pas negation, the second word pas disappears entirely — ne alone sits before the verb, and ni is repeated before each item being excluded. Watch the article too: after ne...pas a noun usually needs de, but after ni it commonly drops the article altogether when the noun is general — ni café ni thé is the natural, unmarked phrasing.
ni...ni can negate the subject too
Ni Paul ni Marie ne sont venus. (Neither Paul nor Marie came)
പോളും ഇല്ല, മേരിയും ഇല്ല — അവർ വന്നില്ല.
When ni...ni negates the subject rather than the object, ne must still appear before the verb even though the two negated subjects already sit ahead of it — Ni Paul ni Marie ne sont venus, never a bare Ni Paul ni Marie sont venus. This can feel odd at first, since a Malayalam sentence would simply attach negation once to the verb (വന്നില്ല) without needing a second marker to echo the doubled subject.
