Double Object Pronouns & Their Order

When a sentence needs both a direct and an indirect object pronoun at once, French locks their order into a strict five-column sequence — a rule Malayalam speakers don't have to learn at all, since Malayalam pronouns carry their own case suffix and can simply follow their natural word order without ever needing to be reshuffled relative to each other.

The five-column ordering table
Il me le donne. (He gives it to me.) — me (col. 1) before le (col. 2)

Before the verb, French object pronouns must appear in this order: (1) me/te/se/nous/vous, (2) le/la/les, (3) lui/leur, (4) y, (5) en. You pick at most one pronoun from each relevant column — you'd never say 'il me te le donne.' Malayalam avoids this problem entirely: അത് ('it') carries no special marking here because it's already unambiguous as the object, and എനിക്ക് ('to me') carries its own dative suffix -ക്ക്, so the two can appear in whichever order feels natural without changing the meaning. Because Malayalam nouns and pronouns each carry their own case suffix, word order does the disambiguating work that French hands off to a fixed positional table.
Why le lui, never lui le
Je le lui ai dit. (I told it to him/her.) — le (col. 2) before lui (col. 3)

When both pronouns are third person, the direct object (le/la/les, column 2) always comes before the indirect object (lui/leur, column 3) — the reverse of columns 1 and 2, where the 1st/2nd-person pronoun comes first. Malayalam sidesteps the whole issue with a case-marking choice instead of a word-order rule: 'telling someone' takes the postposition -ഓട് (അവനോട്, 'to/with him') rather than the plain dative -ക്ക്, and once that suffix is attached, അത് ('it') and അവനോട് ('to him') can sit in either order in the sentence without any risk of confusion.
y and en slot in last
Il y en a. (There is some of it/them.) — y (col. 4) before en (col. 5)
കുറച്ച് ഉണ്ട്.
y and en come after any personal pronoun, and in that relative order to each other — y before en. Malayalam has no equivalent placeholder pronouns for 'there' or 'of it' at all — കുറച്ച് ഉണ്ട് ('there's a bit') simply states existence with an ordinary quantity word, with nothing standing in for a missing noun phrase the way y and en do. Il y en a is one of the most common fixed phrases in French, worth memorizing as a single chunk.
The imperative flips the order
Donne-le-moi ! (Give it to me!) — verb + direct object + indirect object, with moi/toi replacing me/te
അത് എനിക്ക് താ!
In an affirmative command, French pronouns move after the verb (joined by hyphens) and swap order: direct object before indirect object, with me/te becoming the stressed forms moi/toi. Malayalam needs none of this extra machinery — അത് എനിക്ക് താ! keeps exactly the same word order and case suffixes it would use in any other sentence, whether or not the verb is a command. In the French negative imperative, incidentally, the pronouns move back to their normal pre-verb position and order: Ne me le donne pas !
