Once si + plus-que-parfait sets up an unreal past condition, French needs a matching 'would have' tense to complete it — conditionnel passé, built the same way as every compound tense you've already met: an auxiliary plus a past participle.

Conditionnel passé = avoir or être in the conditionnel présent (j'aurais, tu aurais... / je serais, tu serais...) + past participle, with the same être/avoir auxiliary choice and participle agreement rules you learned for passé composé. It completes the si + plus-que-parfait pattern previewed in the B1 si-clauses lesson: the 'if' half goes further into the past (plus-que-parfait), and the 'then' half becomes a past hypothetical (conditionnel passé) — a nuance Tamil doesn't grammaticalize at all, usually leaving it to context and intonation.

devoir and pouvoir in the conditionnel passé are the standard French way to express regret or reproach about the past — 'should have' and 'could have.' This is one of the most common real-world uses of this tense, so it's worth memorizing j'aurais dû / j'aurais pu as fixed chunks even before you've internalized the full paradigm.
The journalistic conditionnel: reporting unconfirmed facts
Le suspect aurait fui à l'étranger. (The suspect reportedly fled abroad — not confirmed.)

French news writing uses conditionnel passé (and conditionnel présent for ongoing situations) to flag information the journalist hasn't personally verified — roughly equivalent to English 'reportedly' or 'allegedly.' Seeing a conditionnel in a news headline is a signal to read the claim as unconfirmed, not as the tense expressing a hypothetical.
