French splits 'you' into tu (informal) and vous (formal) — the same instinct Tamil speakers already have with நீ vs நீங்கள். Start here before any other vocabulary.

Use vous with elders, strangers, officials, and anyone you'd address as நீங்கள். Use tu with close friends, family, and children, same as நீ. One quirk: vous is also the plural 'you all' regardless of formality, the way நீங்கள் doubles as both 'respectful you' and 'you all' in Tamil.
