Word Formation: Prefixes ré-, dé-, in-/im-, mal-
முன்னொட்டுகள் மூலம் புதிய சொற்கள்
A handful of prefixes systematically reshape a French verb or adjective's meaning — spotting them turns an intimidating unfamiliar word into a familiar root plus a predictable twist.

Prefixes as a decoding key, not new vocabulary to memorize word by word
dire (to say) → redire (to say again); faire (to do) → refaire (to redo)
சொல் → மீண்டும் சொல்; செய் → மீண்டும் செய்
French reuses a small set of prefixes to reshape a base word in predictable ways: ré- means 'again/back' (dire → redire, faire → refaire), dé- reverses or undoes an action (faire → défaire 'to undo', courager → décourager 'to discourage'), in-/im- negates adjectives (capable → incapable, possible → impossible), and mal- means 'badly/poorly' (heureux → malheureux 'unhappy', adroit → maladroit 'clumsy'). Tamil doesn't have this single-prefix system — it builds the equivalent meanings with separate words (மீண்டும் 'again', இல்லாத 'without') rather than gluing a fixed prefix onto the root, so treat each French prefix as a decoding shortcut rather than a direct Tamil mapping.
im- vs. in-: a spelling rule, not a random choice
possible → impossible; capable → incapable; patient → impatient; correct → incorrect
சாத்தியம் → சாத்தியமற்றது; திறமையான → திறமையற்ற
in- becomes im- specifically before b, m, and p (impossible, immortel, impatient) — a pronunciation-driven spelling rule, the same reason French writes impossible but incapable. Before most other letters, in- stays as it is (incorrect, injuste, inutile). A near-identical rule governs French's other negative prefix, il-/ir- before l/r (illégal, irrégulier) — once you spot the pattern here, it will keep reappearing elsewhere.
