Konjunktiv II is German's mood for hypotheticals, wishes, and polite requests — very much like Hindi's 'अगर...होता, तो...होता' conditional, which is also a genuine, distinct grammatical form in Hindi.

würde + infinitive: the universal fallback
Ich würde das nicht machen. (I wouldn't do that.)

For almost any verb, you can form Konjunktiv II with würde (conjugated: würde, würdest, würde, würden, würdet, würden) + the infinitive at the end of the clause. This is the safe default native speakers reach for themselves in speech, except for a handful of very common verbs that have their own dedicated forms.

sein, haben, and the modal verbs almost always use their own Konjunktiv II forms rather than würde sein or würde haben, which sound awkward to native speakers. The main forms: wäre (would be), hätte (would have), könnte (could), müsste (would have to), sollte (should), dürfte (would be allowed to), wüsste (would know). These are built by adding an umlaut to the Präteritum stem where possible (war → wäre, hatte → hätte, konnte → könnte), plus the same endings as würde.

Hindi's "अगर...होता, तो...होता" is already a genuine hypothetical grammatical form, so the whole idea of Konjunktiv II shouldn't feel new at all! German hypothetical 'if' sentences put Konjunktiv II in both halves: the wenn-clause (verb still at the end, as always) and the main result clause. Just remember: the verb-final rule still applies inside wenn (Zeit hätte, not hätte Zeit).
Polite requests: Könnten Sie...? Ich hätte gern...

Beyond hypotheticals, Konjunktiv II is the standard way to soften requests and commands — much like Hindi shifting from "कर सकते हैं" to the softer "कर सकेंगे". Könnten Sie...? and Ich hätte gern... (rather than the blunt Ich will / Geben Sie mir) are everyday, expected politeness in shops, restaurants, and formal requests, not just a bookish hypothetical construction.
