Modal Verbs

सहायक भाव-क्रियाएँ (Modal Verbs)

German modal verbs like können ('can') and müssen ('must') work similarly to Hindi's सकता/पड़ता constructions, but they send the main verb all the way to the end of the sentence.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Modal verb in second position, main verb at the very end

German

Ich kann Deutsch sprechen. (I can speak German — sprechen goes last)

Hindi

मैं जर्मन बोल सकता हूँ।

In Hindi's "बोल सकता हूँ" too, the main verb (बोल) comes before the helper (सकता हूँ) — so the main verb sits near the end of the sentence, a similar feel to German. German splits it slightly differently: the conjugated modal verb (kann) takes the normal verb-second position, while the main verb, in its plain infinitive form, moves all the way to the end of the sentence: Ich kann Deutsch sprechen, literally "I can German speak." This "verb bracket" (Satzklammer) is one of the most fundamental structures in German sentences, and the longer the sentence, the further apart the two halves can drift — but the infinitive will always stay at the very end.

Modal verbs are irregular in the singular

German

ich kann / du kannst / er kann — but wir können / ihr könnt / sie können

Hindi

मैं कर सकता हूँ / तुम कर सकते हो / वह कर सकता है — पर हम कर सकते हैं / तुम लोग कर सकते हो / वे कर सकते हैं

Modal verbs shift their core vowel between singular and plural forms (können → kann in ich/du/er) — Hindi's सकना doesn't do this (सकता/सकते only change with gender/number, not the core sound). Each modal verb's singular form just has to be memorized (können→kann, müssen→muss, wollen→will, dürfen→darf); the plural forms return to the infinitive's base and regular endings.
