Lesson 23A2

Modal Verbs & sein/haben in the Past

Modal क्रियाएँ और sein/haben का भूतकाल

Most German verbs prefer the Perfekt tense in conversation, but modal verbs and sein/haben are commonly used in their plain past-tense (Präteritum) form even in everyday speech.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Modal verbs prefer the simple past, even in speech

German

Ich musste arbeiten. (I had to work) — not usually 'Ich habe arbeiten müssen' in casual speech

Hindi

मुझे काम करना पड़ा।

Unlike most German verbs, which prefer the Perfekt in conversation, modal verbs (and haben, sein) are common in their plain past-tense (Präteritum) form even in everyday speech — musste sounds natural where habe...gemusst would sound stilted. This is one place where the general rule 'simple past = formal/written only' doesn't apply.

Modal verbs lose their umlaut in the past tense

German

können → konnte (not könnte!), müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte

Hindi

कर सका, करना पड़ा, अनुमति थी

Notice: the umlaut disappears entirely in the simple past — the ö-sound of kann/können drops out to form konnte. Don't confuse konnte ('could', a plain past-tense fact) with könnte ('could/would be able to', a Konjunktiv II form covered later) — they look nearly identical but mean different things.

war and hatte — the simple past of sein and haben

German

Ich war müde. Ich hatte keine Zeit. (I was tired. I had no time.)

Hindi

मैं थका हुआ था। मेरे पास समय नहीं था।

sein and haben also default to the Präteritum over the Perfekt in speech — ich war sounds natural, while ich bin gewesen sounds like you're specifically emphasizing a completed state. It's worth memorizing both of these as irregular simple-past forms right from the start.
