Reflexive Pronouns: Accusative vs. Dative

Reflexive सर्वनाम: Accusative बनाम Dative

When a reflexive verb also has a direct object — often a body part — German switches the reflexive pronoun to the dative and drops the possessive, something Hindi handles instead with 'अपना'.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Dative reflexive when there's already an object

German

Ich wasche mich. (accusative — I wash myself) vs. Ich wasche mir die Hände. (dative — I wash my hands, literally 'I wash to-myself the hands')

Hindi

मैं खुद को धोता हूँ। बनाम मैं अपने हाथ धोता हूँ।

Hindi's "अपने हाथ धोता हूँ" uses the possessive 'अपना'. When German has a reflexive verb with a direct object too (like 'hands'), the reflexive pronoun switches to the dative, and the body part takes a definite article instead of a possessive — German doesn't say "I wash my hands," it says something closer to "I wash to-myself the hands" (literally). This is quite different from Hindi's 'अपना' structure, so learn it as a distinct German-specific construction.

mir/dir replace mich/dich; sich stays the same

German

Ich putze mir die Zähne. Du putzt dir die Zähne. Er putzt sich die Zähne.

Hindi

मैं अपने दाँत माँजता हूँ। तुम अपने दाँत माँजते हो। वह अपने दाँत माँजता है।

Only the first- and second-person reflexive pronouns switch from accusative to dative form (mich→mir, dich→dir; uns and euch look the same in both cases); the third-person sich looks identical in both cases, so only context tells you which case is in play.
