Two-Way Prepositions

दोतरफ़ा Prepositions

Nine German prepositions switch between accusative and dative depending on whether they describe motion toward a place or a static location — Hindi shows this distinction loosely through verb choice and context rather than through the postposition.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Wechselpräpositionen: case depends on motion vs. location

German

Ich gehe in die Küche. (accusative — motion, into the kitchen) vs. Ich bin in der Küche. (dative — location, in the kitchen)

Hindi

मैं रसोई में जा रहा हूँ। बनाम मैं रसोई में हूँ।

In Hindi, the postposition 'में' stays the same in both sentences — the difference only comes through the verb (जाना vs. होना). German's nine prepositions (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) switch case based on meaning: accusative when they answer wohin? ('to where?' — motion toward a destination), dative when they answer wo? ('where?' — a static location). Ask yourself: is the sentence describing motion toward a new place, or a fixed position?

Same preposition, different meaning by case

German

Er legt das Buch auf den Tisch. (accusative — he puts the book onto the table) vs. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (dative — the book is lying on the table)

Hindi

वह किताब मेज़ पर रखता है। बनाम किताब मेज़ पर रखी है।

German often pairs a motion verb (legen 'to lay down', stellen 'to stand up', setzen 'to seat') with the accusative form, and a position verb (liegen 'to be lying', stehen 'to be standing', sitzen 'to be sitting') with the dative form — a whole system of paired verbs that Hindi largely collapses into the single verb 'रखना/होना'.
