Advanced Particle Combinations
At this level particles no longer arrive one at a time. Dutch stacks them — toch maar, nou eenmaal, dan toch, maar even — and their order is fixed. Getting the sequence wrong is the last thing to give a fluent speaker away.

Particles combine in a fixed order
Ik doe het dan toch maar even.
I'll go ahead and just do it after all, then.
Four particles here, each contributing a shade: dan places the decision in a context, toch signals a reversal of an earlier position, maar reduces the weight of the action, even makes it brief. They cannot be reordered — 'even maar toch dan' is not a sentence. Native speakers acquire the sequence without noticing it, which is why it is rarely taught explicitly and almost never mastered from rules alone.
nou eenmaal accepts an unchangeable state of affairs
Het is nou eenmaal zo. Dat gaat nou eenmaal niet.
That's just how it is. It simply can't be done.
nou eenmaal (or nu eenmaal in writing) marks something as a given not worth arguing about — the equivalent of English 'just' in 'that's just how it is', but stronger and more resigned. It is a characteristically Dutch move in discussion: rather than defending a position, you classify it as beyond dispute.
toch wel and toch niet: reversing a reversal
Het is toch wel gelukt. Ik kom toch niet.
It did work out after all. I'm not coming after all.
toch wel confirms something that had been doubted; toch niet cancels something that had been expected. The pair lets a speaker update a shared assumption in two words, where English needs 'after all' plus a positive or negative verb. Note that both keep the particles adjacent and place them in the middle field, never at the end.
