Dutch prefixed verbs fall into two camps that look identical on the page. One splits apart when conjugated, the other never moves — and the only reliable clue is which syllable carries the stress.

Stressed prefixes separate; unstressed ones do not
ópstaan → ik sta op / bezóeken → ik bezoek
to get up → I get up / to visit → I visit
If the prefix is stressed — op-, aan-, uit-, mee-, af-, in-, door- — it detaches and travels to the end of the clause when the verb is conjugated. If the prefix is unstressed — be-, ge-, ver-, ont-, her-, er- — it is welded on permanently: ik bezoek, ik vertel, ik ontmoet. Hearing where the stress falls is the fastest way to predict the behavior, which is why it is worth saying new verbs out loud.
The participle shows the difference clearly

got up / visited
Separable verbs build their participle by inserting ge- between the prefix and the stem, producing one long word: opgestaan, meegegaan, uitgenodigd. Inseparable verbs add no ge- at all: bezocht, verteld, ontmoet. So even in writing, the participle form gives the game away — a ge- in the middle means the verb separates, no ge- at all means it does not.
A few verbs exist in both versions with different meanings
vóórkomen (to occur) → het komt voor / voorkómen (to prevent) → ik voorkom
to occur → it occurs / to prevent → I prevent
A small set of verbs is spelled identically but split into two verbs by stress alone. vóórkomen with stress on the prefix means 'to occur' and separates; voorkómen with stress on the stem means 'to prevent' and does not. The same happens with ondergaan and overdrijven. English has a faint echo of this in noun/verb pairs like 'récord' and 'recórd', but nothing where the meaning of a verb changes this drastically.
