Lesson 57C1

Subjunctive Mood

विध्यर्थक भाव

A small pocket of formal English grammar uses the plain, unconjugated verb form even for he/she/it — a fossil of an older verb mood that survives specifically after suggestion and demand verbs, much like Hindi shifts the main verb into its own subjunctive-like जाए/करे/हो forms after a कि-clause of wish, suggestion, or demand.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Suggest/demand/insist trigger a bare verb, matching Hindi's own subjunctive verb forms

English

I suggest that he go alone. (not 'goes' — the base form, regardless of he/she/it)

Hindi

मैं सुझाव देता हूँ कि वह अकेला जाए। (जाए यहाँ हिंदी का अपना विध्यर्थक क्रिया-रूप है, न कि सामान्य वर्तमान काल का 'जाता है')

Hindi already has its own dedicated subjunctive-like verb forms — जाए, करे, हो, आए — used after कि-clauses expressing a wish, suggestion, demand, or possibility: चाहता हूँ कि वह जाए, ज़रूरी है कि वह आए। These forms replace the ordinary habitual present (जाता है) exactly the way English replaces 'goes' with the bare 'go' after suggest, recommend, insist, and demand. The trigger is different — English keys off certain verbs of urging, Hindi keys off the कि-clause itself — but the underlying instinct, that a wish or demand pulls the verb into a special non-indicative shape, is shared by both languages. 'If I were you' is the other common English subjunctive survivor, using were for every person instead of was — closer to Hindi's counterfactual होता (अगर मैं तुम होता तो...).
