Lesson 29B1

Future: will vs. going to

எதிர்காலம்: will vs going to

English keeps two future forms alive side by side, and the choice signals something Tamil's single future-tense ending doesn't distinguish: whether the decision was made now or earlier.

Grammar Comparison

இலக்கண ஒப்பீடு

will for decisions made on the spot; going to for plans made earlier

English

I'll answer it! (deciding right now, as the phone rings) vs. I'm going to call her later. (a plan already made before this moment)

Tamil

நான் பதில் சொல்றேன்! / நான் அவளை பிறகு அழைக்கப் போறேன். (Tamil's future ending doesn't distinguish spontaneous decisions from prior plans)

Tamil's future tense suffix works identically whether you decided something a second ago or planned it last week — the grammar doesn't care. English draws a genuine distinction: will marks a decision made in the moment of speaking (I'll get it!), while going to marks a plan or intention formed before now (I'm going to visit my parents this weekend). Listen for this distinction in native speech — it's subtle but consistent, and it's one more layer of information English packs into its tense choice that Tamil leaves to context.
