Conditionnel Présent: Hypotheticals & Polite Requests

Conditionnel Présent: काल्पनिक बातें और विनम्र निवेदन

French conditionnel présent is a fully conjugated verb form built on the same irregular stems as futur simple, used both for hypotheticals and, very commonly, to soften a request — je voudrais rather than the blunter je veux. Hindi marks this same politeness-softening with its own shift, from चाहता हूँ to चाहिए, and marks the hypothetical sense with its familiar ता/ती + होता construction.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Formation: same stem as futur simple + imparfait endings — Hindi doesn't share a stem this way

French

je parlerais, tu parlerais, il parlerait, nous parlerions, vous parleriez, ils parleraient

Hindi

मैं बोलूँगा (भविष्य) से जुड़ा नहीं — हिंदी में would के लिए अलग रूप है

Conditionnel présent uses exactly the same stems as futur simple but swaps the future's endings for imparfait's endings. Hindi doesn't build 'would' out of its future tense the same way — Hindi's future (बोलूँगा) and its hypothetical/conditional sense (बोलता, used inside अगर...तो sentences) come from genuinely different verb forms, not from the same stem with a different ending the way French does. This particular structural shortcut — reuse the future stem, just change the ending — is a French-specific efficiency with no Hindi parallel to lean on.

Hypothetical and polite use ≈ Hindi's चाहिए / सकेंगे softening

French

Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. / Pourriez-vous m'aider ?

Hindi

मुझे एक कॉफ़ी चाहिए। / क्या आप मेरी मदद कर सकेंगे?

je voudrais softens je veux exactly the way the requests-invitations lesson established Hindi सकेंगे softens सकते हैं — a shift to a more tentative-sounding verb form signals politeness in both languages. Hindi's चाहिए is already about as soft as मुझे...चाहिए can get, so it maps naturally onto je voudrais without much adjustment; the सकेंगे-for-pourriez-vous mapping you already built earlier applies here directly too.

The result clause of a hypothetical si-sentence ≈ Hindi's तो + होता/करता

French

Si j'avais de l'argent, j'achèterais une maison.

Hindi

अगर मेरे पास पैसे होते, तो मैं घर ख़रीदता।

Conditionnel présent is also the standard 'would' half of a hypothetical if-sentence. Hindi's तो + habitual-conditional form (ख़रीदता) does the identical job in its own अगर...तो construction, so the underlying two-clause hypothetical shape — a condition plus a would-be result — is one you already build naturally in Hindi; you're mapping it onto new French verb endings, not learning the concept fresh.
