Plus-que-parfait: The Past-Before-the-Past

Plus-que-parfait: बीते हुए भूतकाल से पहले का भूतकाल

Hindi already has an exact structural twin for this tense — चुका था — so plus-que-parfait should feel like one of the most intuitive tenses so far: same logic, same 'further-back past' job, just built from avoir/être's imparfait instead of चुका था's चुका + था.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Formation: avoir/être in imparfait + past participle ≈ चुका + था

French

J'avais mangé avant qu'il arrive.

Hindi

मैं खा चुका था उसके आने से पहले।

Plus-que-parfait is built exactly like passé composé, except the auxiliary is put into imparfait instead of présent: j'avais mangé. Hindi's चुका था does the identical job with the identical two-part shape — चुका (a completion marker attached to the verb stem) + था (होना's past form) — मैं खा चुका था maps almost word for word onto j'avais mangé, both signaling 'this was already finished by that point in the past'. This is one of the rare tenses where French, Hindi, and English all reach for essentially the same underlying logic and a very similar surface structure.

Same auxiliary-choice and agreement rules carry over

French

Elle était déjà partie quand je suis arrivé. / Il avait écrit la lettre que j'avais lue.

Hindi

मैं पहुँचा तब तक वह जा चुकी थी। / उसने वह पत्र लिखा था जो मैं पढ़ चुका था।

Plus-que-parfait follows exactly the same rules as passé composé for choosing avoir vs. être and for participle agreement. Hindi's चुका/चुकी also agrees with the subject's gender (जा चुकी थी for a woman, जा चुका था for a man), so nothing new needs to be learned here beyond swapping the auxiliary's tense — Hindi's own चुका/चुकी agreement habit reinforces the pattern further.

Marks an event further back than another already-anchored past event

French

Quand je suis arrivé, il était déjà parti.

Hindi

जब मैं पहुँचा, वह पहले ही जा चुका था।

Use plus-que-parfait for whichever event happened first, when you're already narrating in the past and need to point to something that happened even earlier. This sentence maps almost token-for-token onto its Hindi translation — पहुँचा (simple past) matches je suis arrivé, and जा चुका था matches était parti — a rare moment of near 1:1 correspondence across French, Hindi, and English all at once.
