Hobbies & Free Time
शौक़ और ख़ाली समय
French hobby verbs pair with jouer à (for games/sports) or jouer de (for instruments) — and Hindi already makes this exact split with two entirely different verbs, खेलना (games/sports) and बजाना (instruments), so this isn't a new distinction at all, just a different way of marking it.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
jouer à vs. jouer de ≈ खेलना vs. बजाना — a split Hindi already makes
jouer au foot (to play football) vs. jouer du piano (to play the piano)
फ़ुटबॉल खेलना (खेलना, sports/games) बनाम पियानो बजाना (बजाना, instruments)
jouer à + sport/game names the activity you play (jouer au tennis, jouer aux cartes); jouer de + musical instrument names the instrument you play (jouer de la guitare, jouer du piano). Unlike English, which collapses both into the single verb 'play', Hindi already keeps these fully apart with two different verbs: खेलना for games and sports (फ़ुटबॉल खेलना), and बजाना for instruments (पियानो बजाना) — बजाना even literally suggests 'making something sound/ring'. A Hindi speaker already has the right instinct that these are two conceptually different activities; you just need to learn that French marks the same split with a preposition (à vs. de) rather than two separate verbs.
