Travel & Transportation
यात्रा और परिवहन
Getting around by different modes of transport uses en for most vehicles but à pied and à vélo for the ones you straddle or walk — Hindi's से ('by/with') is just as uniform as English's 'by' across every vehicle, so this en/à split is a fresh pairing to memorize with no Hindi shortcut.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
en for enclosed transport, à for straddled/on-foot — Hindi's से doesn't split this way
en voiture, en train, en avion — but à pied, à vélo, à moto
कार से, ट्रेन से, हवाई जहाज़ से — पैदल, साइकिल से, बाइक से
Vehicles you sit inside take en (en voiture, 'by car'); transport you sit astride, plus walking, take à (à pied, 'on foot', à vélo, 'by bike'). Hindi's से covers every vehicle uniformly — कार से, ट्रेन से, साइकिल से all use the identical postposition, with only पैदल ('on foot') standing apart as its own adverb, much like English keeps 'on foot' separate from 'by car' but otherwise uses 'by' everywhere else. French's en/à split doesn't map onto any distinction Hindi already makes — treat it as a fresh pairing to memorize rather than a rule you can derive from the Hindi translation.
