Negation: ne...pas and Beyond

निषेध: ne...pas और अन्य रूप

sentence-structure.json already introduced ne...pas as French's signature two-part negation. Here's the fuller family of negative expressions built on the same wrap-around pattern, plus a very common spoken-French shortcut.

व्याकरण तुलना

The ne...X family

French

ne...jamais (never), ne...rien (nothing), ne...personne (no one), ne...plus (no more/no longer)

Hindi

कभी नहीं, कुछ नहीं, कोई नहीं, अब नहीं

All of these follow the same sandwich pattern as ne...pas: ne comes right before the conjugated verb, and the second piece comes right after it. Je ne bois jamais de café ('I never drink coffee'), Je ne vois rien ('I see nothing'), Je ne connais personne ici ('I don't know anyone here'), Je n'ai plus faim ('I'm not hungry anymore'). Hindi handles all of these with a single word placed before the verb — कभी नहीं, कुछ नहीं, कोई नहीं, अब नहीं — not a wraparound structure that brackets the verb from both sides, so keep reminding yourself that French needs two pieces around the verb, not just one word in front of it.

Dropping ne in casual speech

French

J'sais pas. (spoken, = Je ne sais pas — 'I don't know')

Hindi

बोलचाल में 'ne' प्रायः छूट जाता है

In fast, informal spoken French, native speakers very often drop ne entirely and rely on pas (or rien, jamais, etc.) alone to signal negation: J'sais pas instead of Je ne sais pas. This is genuinely how French is spoken day-to-day, but it's considered too casual for writing or formal contexts — recognize it when you hear it, but keep writing the full ne...pas yourself until you're deep into informal register.
