Shopping & Money

ख़रीदारी और पैसा

France uses the euro, and shopping conversations lean on a small set of fixed questions and phrases you'll reuse constantly — French builds these with a dedicated verb, coûter ('to cost'), while Hindi builds the same question out of a genitive construction with no verb 'to cost' at all.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Combien ça coûte ? — French has a verb 'to cost'; Hindi has none

French

Combien ça coûte ? (How much does this cost?) — Ça coûte quinze euros. (It costs 15 euros.)

Hindi

यह कितने का है? — यह पंद्रह यूरो का है।

coûter ('to cost') is a regular -er verb conjugated like any other, and the question almost always uses the pronoun ça ('this/that') as the subject — Ça coûte combien ? works just as well as Combien ça coûte ?, with the question word simply moved to the end, a casual-register move. Hindi has no dedicated verb 'to cost' at all: यह कितने का है literally means 'this is of how-much', using का (a genitive/possessive marker) plus है rather than an action verb — a fundamentally different mechanism from French's coûter. Reach for this genitive pattern instead of hunting for a Hindi verb to match coûter, since none exists.
