Conditionnel Présent: Hypotheticals & Polite Requests

സങ്കൽപ്പ ക്രിയാരൂപം: Conditionnel Présent

Conditionnel présent reuses the same irregular stems you just memorized for futur simple, but swaps in imparfait's endings instead — and the result, je voudrais / pourriez-vous, is the everyday French of polite requests. Malayalam doesn't build 'would' this way at all, since Malayalam verbs don't change endings by person to begin with, but it softens requests with its own dedicated tools.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

Formation: futur-simple stem + imparfait endings

French

parler → je parlerais, tu parlerais, il parlerait, nous parlerions, vous parleriez, ils parleraient

Malayalam

പറയുമായിരുന്നു (സങ്കൽപ്പം)

Take the exact same stem you use for futur simple (the infinitive, or the irregular stem for irregular verbs) and attach imparfait's endings (-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient) instead of futur simple's endings — so être→ser- gives je serais (I would be), avoir→aur- gives j'aurais (I would have). Malayalam expresses the same 'would' meaning with a fixed construction, verb-stem plus -ുമായിരുന്നു (a fusion of the future -ും and the past 'was' ആയിരുന്നു): പറയുമായിരുന്നു ('would say/have said'). Unlike French, this single Malayalam form never changes for person — ഞാൻ പറയുമായിരുന്നു and അവൻ പറയുമായിരുന്നു use the identical verb, so the six-way ending change you're drilling here is entirely new territory.

Hypotheticals: the 'would' clause of a si-sentence

French

Si j'avais de l'argent, je voyagerais. (If I had money, I would travel)

Malayalam

എനിക്ക് പണം ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ, ഞാൻ യാത്ര ചെയ്യുമായിരുന്നു.

Conditionnel présent is the standard result-clause tense after si + imparfait. Malayalam builds a matching two-part hypothetical: the condition takes the past tense plus -എങ്കിൽ ('if') — ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ, 'if there had been' — and the result takes the same -ുമായിരുന്നു form just introduced. Lesson 33 covers the full si-clause system; here, just note that the 'would' half of any hypothetical sentence is conditionnel présent, matching Malayalam's -ുമായിരുന്നു half.

Politeness: je voudrais, pourriez-vous — softened requests

French

Je voudrais un café, s'il vous plaît. (I would like a coffee) / Pourriez-vous m'aider ? (Could you help me?)

Malayalam

എനിക്ക് ഒരു കാപ്പി തരാമോ? / നിങ്ങൾക്ക് എന്നെ സഹായിക്കാമോ?

French uses conditionnel présent to soften a request without changing its literal meaning: je veux un café is blunt, je voudrais un café is the polite, expected way to order. Malayalam softens requests differently, with a permissive question suffix -ആമോ tacked onto the verb: തരാമോ? ('would you give / may I have?', from തരുക 'to give') and സഹായിക്കാമോ? ('could you help?') turn a flat request into a polite one by literally asking permission rather than by shifting tense. The mechanism is unrelated to French's conditionnel, but the social effect — turning a demand into a question — is the same instinct.
