Plus-que-parfait: The Past-Before-the-Past

When one past event needs to be placed clearly before another past event — 'I had already eaten when he arrived' — French reaches for a third past tense built the same way as passé composé, just with its auxiliary pushed one step further back in time. Malayalam builds this exact same 'had done' layering with its own auxiliary-plus-participle construction, so the underlying logic here will feel immediately familiar.

Plus-que-parfait uses exactly the same avoir/être-choice and participle-agreement rules as passé composé — the only change is that the auxiliary itself is in imparfait rather than présent: j'avais mangé, j'étais parti(e), instead of j'ai mangé, je suis parti(e). Malayalam builds the identical layered idea by taking the past participle of the verb and adding ഇരുന്നു ('was'): കഴിച്ചു ('ate') plus ഇരുന്നു becomes കഴിച്ചിരുന്നു ('had eaten') — a genuine structural parallel, even though the two languages arrive at it with completely different building blocks.
Why it matters: sequencing two past events unambiguously
J'avais fini mes devoirs quand tu as appelé. (I had finished my homework when you called — finishing happened first, clearly)
നീ വിളിച്ചപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ എന്റെ ഹോംവർക്ക് നേരത്തേ തന്നെ തീർത്തിരുന്നു. (തീർത്തത് ആദ്യം നടന്നു)
If both events were simply passé composé, French wouldn't clearly show which one came first — j'ai fini... tu as appelé could sound like two events close together, not necessarily one before the other. Plus-que-parfait removes that ambiguity by explicitly marking the earlier event as further back in time. Malayalam's -ഇരുന്നു construction (തീർത്തിരുന്നു, 'had finished') does exactly the same job, marking an event as already-completed-before-another-past-point, so trust that same instinct when deciding whether a French sentence needs plus-que-parfait or plain passé composé.
