Because this is a reply to a friend's message, the whole letter stays in the tu register throughout — mixing in vous would read as jarringly formal. Malayalam has the same instinct built in with the നീ/നിങ്ങൾ (nee/ningal) distinction: once you address a friend as നീ, switching mid-letter to the respectful നിങ്ങൾ would feel just as out of place.
