Passé Composé vs. Imparfait in Narration

Malayalam usually tells a whole story by chaining ordinary past-tense verbs one after another, so French forcing you to choose between passé composé and imparfait for every single past action can feel like an odd extra decision — but the choice tracks a real distinction: what moved the story forward versus what was simply true or ongoing at the time.

Passé composé = foreground events, one after another
Je suis entré, j'ai vu Marie, et je lui ai parlé. (I came in, saw Marie, and spoke to her — three completed events, in order)

Use passé composé for the events that actually happen and push the story forward — the main timeline. Each one is treated as a single completed action with a clear start and end, the way a Malayalam narrative simply chains കയറി, കണ്ടു, സംസാരിച്ചു ('entered', 'saw', 'spoke') one after another. If you could draw arrows between the events on a timeline, they're passé composé.
Imparfait = the background the events happen against
Il pleuvait et il faisait froid quand je suis sorti. (It was raining and it was cold when I went out)
ഞാൻ പുറത്തിറങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ മഴ പെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു, തണുപ്പും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. (പശ്ചാത്തല വിവരണം, ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സംഭവമല്ല)
Imparfait paints the scene: weather, time, ongoing states, habits, feelings, what was already in progress. It has no clear edges — you can't point to when the rain 'started' or 'ended' within the sentence. Malayalam marks this same ongoing-in-the-past feel with the compound -ുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു ('was doing', as in പെയ്തുകൊണ്ടിരുന്നു, 'was raining'), though French does it with one plain verb form (pleuvait) rather than a compound continuous.
Worked example: both tenses in one short narrative
Hier, il faisait beau. Je me promenais dans le parc quand j'ai rencontré un vieil ami. Il portait un chapeau bleu. On a bu un café ensemble.
ഇന്നലെ കാലാവസ്ഥ നല്ലതായിരുന്നു. ഞാൻ പാർക്കിൽ നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരു പഴയ സുഹൃത്തിനെ കണ്ടുമുട്ടി. അവൻ നീല തൊപ്പി ധരിച്ചിരുന്നു. ഞങ്ങൾ ഒരുമിച്ച് കാപ്പി കുടിച്ചു.
faisait, me promenais, and portait are all imparfait — weather, an ongoing action, and a description, none of them 'events'. ai rencontré and a bu are passé composé — the two things that actually happened: meeting the friend and drinking coffee. Notice the classic pattern quand + imparfait + passé composé: 'I was walking (ongoing) when I met (interrupting event) him' — this mirrors how Malayalam pairs നടന്നുകൊണ്ടിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ ('while walking', ongoing) with കണ്ടുമുട്ടി ('met', a completed event) in the same sentence.
Some verbs change meaning depending on which past you use
Je savais son nom. (I knew his name — a state) vs. J'ai su son nom. (I found out his name — the moment of learning it)
എനിക്ക് അവന്റെ പേര് അറിയാമായിരുന്നു (നിലവിലുള്ള അറിവ്) vs. എനിക്ക് അവന്റെ പേര് അറിയാൻ കഴിഞ്ഞു (അറിഞ്ഞ നിമിഷം)
A handful of high-frequency verbs describe a mental/physical state, so their imparfait means 'was in that state' while their passé composé means 'entered that state at a specific moment'. savoir: savais 'knew' vs. ai su 'found out'. connaître: connaissais 'knew (a person/place)' vs. ai connu 'met for the first time'. pouvoir: pouvais 'was able to (in general)' vs. ai pu 'managed to / succeeded in (that one time)'. vouloir: voulais 'wanted' vs. ai voulu 'decided to / tried to'. Malayalam doesn't grammaticalize this shift on the verb itself — it leans on context or an extra phrase instead — so these four verbs are worth memorizing as a set.
