Lesson 26.04A2

House & Home

വീടും ഭവനവും

Rooms and furniture vocabulary, plus the everyday verb habiter (to live/reside), which behaves a little differently from what you might expect before the name of a city.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

habiter can skip the preposition before a city, much like Malayalam's locative suffix

French

J'habite Paris. or J'habite à Paris. (I live in Paris — à is optional before a city)

Malayalam

ഞാൻ പാരീസിൽ താമസിക്കുന്നു.

habiter can be used transitively (habiter Paris) or with the preposition à (habiter à Paris) — both are correct and common, which is more flexible than always needing a separate word for 'in'. Malayalam already builds that idea straight into the noun: the locative suffix -ൽ (-il) attaches directly onto the place name, so 'Paris' plus -ൽ gives 'in Paris' with no separate preposition at all — closer to the bare habiter Paris than to the à version.
