Passé Simple: The Literary Past Tense

സാഹിത്യ ഭൂതകാലം (Passé Simple)

Passé simple is a French tense reserved entirely for formal narration — appearing only in novels, history books, and fairy tales, never in speech, where passé composé takes over completely — and Malayalam offers no ready-made comparison, since Malayalam's own past-tense verb form never changes shape between formal narration and everyday speech, or even between one subject and another.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

Recognition over production

French

Il naquit en 1802 et mourut en 1885. (He was born in 1802 and died in 1885.)

Malayalam

അദ്ദേഹം 1802ൽ ജനിച്ച് 1885ൽ മരിച്ചു.

You will almost never need to write in the passé simple, but you'll meet it constantly reading novels, biographies, and historical texts, so the goal here is recognition, not production. It covers exactly the same ground as passé composé — a single, completed past action — but signals formal, literary narration instead of spoken or everyday-written French. Malayalam has nothing structurally like this: its past tense verb, such as ജനിച്ചു ('was born') or മരിച്ചു ('died'), stays exactly the same whether it's used in a casual sentence or a formal biography, so treat passé simple as a genuinely new category rather than a variant of something familiar.

Regular formation

French

il parla (he spoke, -er) / il finit (he finished, -ir) / il vendit (he sold, -re)

Malayalam

അവൻ സംസാരിച്ചു / അവൻ തീർത്തു / അവൻ വിറ്റു

-er verbs take -ai, -as, -a, -âmes, -âtes, -èrent; -ir and -re verbs take -is, -is, -it, -îmes, -îtes, -irent. In practice you'll meet the 3rd person singular and plural (il/elle ...-a/-it, ils/elles ...-èrent/-irent) far more often than any other form, since narration is almost always in the third person — it's efficient to prioritize recognizing those two forms first. This asymmetry between singular and plural verb endings has no counterpart in Malayalam at all, where the verb form (സംസാരിച്ചു, തീർത്തു, വിറ്റു) is identical whether the subject is അവൻ ('he') or അവർ ('they') — the pronoun alone carries that information.

The irregulars you must recognize on sight

These are the highest-frequency irregular passé simple forms you'll run into, and none of them look like their infinitive at a glance the way parla obviously comes from parler — fut doesn't visibly resemble être, nor eut avoir. Because 3rd person singular and plural are what you'll actually encounter, memorize the il/elle and ils/elles forms first: fut/furent, eut/eurent, fit/firent, vint/vinrent, prit/prirent, vit/virent, dit/dirent — and remember that in Malayalam, the equivalent plural forms (ആയിരുന്നു, ചെയ്തു, വന്നു...) would look exactly the same as the singular ones, so this is one place where French genuinely demands more forms to memorize than Malayalam does for the same idea.
