Passive Agent Marking: par vs. de

കർമ്മണി പ്രയോഗത്തിലെ കർത്താവ്: par vs. de

Most passive sentences mark the agent with par, but a specific group of verbs — describing states, feelings, or permanent conditions rather than one-off actions — prefer de instead. Malayalam already draws a related line of its own between a true doer (marked with -ആൽ) and a material or cause something is covered or filled with (marked with കൊണ്ട്), which makes French's par/de split easier to feel than it might first look.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

par for concrete, deliberate actions

French

La fenêtre a été cassée par un enfant. (The window was broken by a child)

Malayalam

ജനൽ ഒരു കുട്ടിയാൽ പൊട്ടിക്കപ്പെട്ടു.

par is the default and covers the vast majority of passives: a specific agent performing a concrete, often one-time action — casser, construire, écrire, détruire. This maps directly onto Malayalam's -ആൽ agentive suffix (കുട്ടിയാൽ, 'by a/the child'), used the same way for a real doer carrying out a real action. If in doubt, par is the safe choice, just as -ആൽ is the safe choice in Malayalam.

de for states, emotions, and habitual/permanent conditions

French

La montagne est couverte de neige. / Il est aimé de tous. / Le jardin est entouré d'un mur.

Malayalam

മല മഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് മൂടപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു. / അവൻ എല്ലാവരാലും സ്നേഹിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. / തോട്ടം ഒരു മതിലുകൊണ്ട് ചുറ്റപ്പെട്ടിരിക്കുന്നു.

A specific set of verbs describing an ongoing state rather than an action in progress — couvrir (couvert de), entourer (entouré de), aimer (aimé de, more literary than par here), remplir (rempli de), accompagner (accompagné de) — take de instead of par, because these describe how something IS rather than what someone DID to it. Malayalam actually marks a similar distinction on its own: മഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ('with snow', using കൊണ്ട് 'with/by means of' for the covering material) reads differently from ഒരു കുട്ടിയാൽ ('by a child', using -ആൽ for a true agent) — so mapping French's de-verbs onto Malayalam's കൊണ്ട് and its par-verbs onto -ആൽ is a genuinely useful shortcut, even though French draws the line slightly differently verb by verb, so it still has to be learned one verb at a time.

The same verb can take either, with a shift in feel

French

Il est respecté de ses collègues. (a general, ongoing state of respect) vs. Il a été respecté par le jury. (par, a specific act of judging by a specific body)

Malayalam

അവൻ സഹപ്രവർത്തകരാൽ ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു (സ്ഥിരമായ ബഹുമാനം) vs. അവൻ ജൂറിയാൽ ബഹുമാനിക്കപ്പെട്ടു (ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സന്ദർഭത്തിലെ പ്രവൃത്തി)

A few verbs genuinely accept both, and the choice signals register and nuance: de leans literary/permanent-state, par leans concrete/event-like. Malayalam doesn't force a matching lexical split here — both Malayalam sentences above use the same -ആൽ regardless of whether the respect is a lasting state or a one-off event, so for B1 purposes, it's enough to recognize both French options exist and default to par unless you're clearly describing a fixed state with one of the de-verbs above.
