Spoken French almost always uses a compound past tense — avoir or être plus a past participle — built from two words where Tamil uses just one verb ending.

The passé composé pairs a helper verb (avoir or être) conjugated in the present with a past participle. Tamil expresses the same idea with one word (சாப்பிட்டேன்) carrying the past-tense suffix itself — French instead splits that meaning across two words, with the 'real' content (mangé) coming last.

Tamil doesn't split its past tense by verb type. French does: most verbs take avoir, but a small set of motion and change-of-state verbs take être instead — traditionally memorized via the mnemonic 'DR & MRS VANDERTRAMP' (Devenir, Revenir, Monter, Rester, Sortir, Venir, Aller, Naître, Descendre, Entrer, Rentrer, Tomber, Retourner, Arriver, Mourir, Partir). All reflexive verbs also take être — you'll meet that in the reflexive-verbs lesson. There's no Tamil shortcut here; this list has to be memorized.

Regular participles follow the verb family: -er verbs end in -é (parlé), -ir verbs in -i (fini), -re verbs in -u (vendu). A handful of very common verbs are irregular and must be learned as whole words: être → été, avoir → eu, faire → fait, prendre → pris, mettre → mis, voir → vu. These irregulars show up constantly, so treat them as priority vocabulary.
