würde + infinitive: the all-purpose substitute
Ich würde das nicht machen. (I wouldn't do that.)

For nearly any verb, you can build Konjunktiv II with würde (conjugated: würde, würdest, würde, würden, würdet, würden) plus the infinitive at the end of the clause — directly parallel to English 'would + base verb'. This würde-construction is the safe default that native speakers themselves reach for in casual speech, except for a handful of very common verbs that keep their own dedicated forms.
A short list of verbs use their own irregular forms instead
Ich wäre gern reich. Ich hätte gern mehr Zeit. Ich könnte dir helfen.

sein, haben, and the modal verbs almost always use their own Konjunktiv II forms rather than würde + infinitive, because würde sein or würde haben sounds clumsy to native ears. Key forms: wäre (would be), hätte (would have), könnte (could), müsste (would have to), sollte (should), dürfte (would be allowed to), wüsste (would know). These are built from the Präteritum stem with an umlaut added where possible (war → wäre, hatte → hätte, konnte → könnte) plus the same endings as würde.

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen.
If I had time, I would visit you.
Hypothetical 'if' sentences put Konjunktiv II in both halves: the wenn-clause (verb-final, as always in subordinate clauses) and the main result clause. This matches English's 'If I had... I would...' structure closely, but watch two habits: German needs Konjunktiv II in the wenn-clause even though English's 'If I had time' already looks past-tense (which can mask that hätte is a distinct mood, not just a tense), and the verb-final rule inside wenn still applies (Zeit hätte, not hätte Zeit).
Polite requests: Könnten Sie...? Ich hätte gern...
Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen? Ich hätte gern einen Kaffee.
Could you please help me? I'd like a coffee.
Beyond hypotheticals, Konjunktiv II is the standard way to soften requests and orders into polite ones — much like English swapping 'Can you' for the more polite 'Could you'. Könnten Sie...? and Ich hätte gern... (rather than the blunter Ich will / Geben Sie mir) are everyday, expected politeness formulas in shops, restaurants, and formal requests, not just textbook hypotheticals.
