Modal Verbs & sein/haben in the Past

Modal Verbs & sein/haben in the Past

Unlike most German verbs, which favor the Perfekt in conversation, modal verbs and sein/haben are commonly used in their simple past (Präteritum) form even in everyday speech.

Grammar Comparison

Grammar Comparison

Modal verbs prefer the simple past, even in speech

German

Ich musste arbeiten. (I had to work) — not usually 'Ich habe arbeiten müssen' in casual speech

English

I had to work.

Unlike most German verbs, which favor the Perfekt in conversation, modal verbs (and haben, sein) are commonly used in their simple past (Präteritum) form even in everyday speech — musste sounds natural where habe...gemusst would sound stilted. This is one case where the 'simple past = formal/written only' rule you might have heard about German doesn't apply.

Modal verb past-tense stems drop the umlaut

German

können → konnte (not könnte!), müssen → musste, dürfen → durfte

English

could, had to, was allowed to

Notice the umlaut disappears in the simple past: kann/können loses its ö-sound entirely to become konnte. Don't confuse konnte ('could / was able to', simple past fact) with könnte ('could / would be able to', the Konjunktiv II form you'll meet later) — they look almost identical but mean different things.

war and hatte — the simple past of sein and haben

German

Ich war müde. Ich hatte keine Zeit. (I was tired. I had no time.)

English

I was tired. I had no time.

sein and haben also default to Präteritum in speech rather than Perfekt — ich war sounds natural, ich bin gewesen sounds like you're specifically emphasizing a completed state. These two are worth memorizing as simple-past irregulars from day one.
