English uses 'by' for every passive agent, no matter what kind. German instead reaches for von + dative specifically when the agent is a person, organization, or other entity actively doing the action — the closest match to a normal active-sentence subject (Ein berühmter Autor schrieb das Buch → Das Buch wurde von einem berühmten Autor geschrieben).
durch + accusative for an indirect cause or means
Das Dorf wurde durch den Sturm zerstört.
The village was destroyed by the storm.
When the passive names an impersonal force, event, or means through which something happens — a storm, a fire, a process — German uses durch + accusative instead of von. Compare: Das Fenster wurde von dem Jungen zerbrochen (a person directly did it, von) versus Das Fenster wurde durch den Ball zerbrochen (an object was the means, durch). English speakers have no equivalent choice to make ('by' covers both), so this pairing needs deliberate practice.
mit + dative for a tool or instrument
Die Tür wurde mit einem Schlüssel geöffnet.
The door was opened with a key.
A third option, mit + dative, marks the physical tool or instrument used to carry out the action — distinct from both the agent (von) and the impersonal cause (durch). English again uses one preposition ('with') where German keeps mit strictly for instruments, separate from von and durch.
