Two-Way Prepositions

Two-Way Prepositions

Nine German prepositions switch between accusative and dative depending on whether they describe motion toward a place or a fixed location — a case-based distinction English makes only loosely, through word choice and context.

Grammar Comparison

Wechselpräpositionen: case depends on motion vs. location

German

Ich gehe in die Küche. (accusative — motion, into the kitchen) vs. Ich bin in der Küche. (dative — location, in the kitchen)

English

I'm going into the kitchen. vs. I am in the kitchen.

Nine prepositions (in, an, auf, über, unter, vor, hinter, neben, zwischen) switch case depending on meaning: accusative when they answer wohin? ('to where?' — motion toward a destination), dative when they answer wo? ('where?' — a static position). English sometimes uses different prepositions for this ('into' vs. 'in') but mostly relies on context and verb choice ('go in' vs. 'sit in') rather than a grammatical case system. The test to ask yourself: does the sentence describe movement toward a new location, or a fixed position?

Same preposition, different meaning by case

German

Er legt das Buch auf den Tisch. (accusative — he puts the book onto the table) vs. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. (dative — the book is lying on the table)

English

He puts the book on the table. vs. The book is (lying) on the table.

German often pairs a motion verb (legen 'lay/put', stellen 'stand/put', setzen 'set/place') with the accusative version, and a position verb (liegen 'lie', stehen 'stand', sitzen 'sit') with the dative version — a whole system of paired verbs that English collapses into all-purpose 'put' and 'be'.
