Lesson 44B2

Concessive Clauses: obwohl, trotzdem, zwar...aber

अवरोधसूचक उपवाक्य: obwohl, trotzdem, zwar...aber

German has three different ways to say 'although/nevertheless' — a subordinating conjunction, a clause-opening adverb, and a pair — and each one sends the verb to a different spot.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

obwohl: a subordinating conjunction, verb to the end

German

Obwohl es regnet, gehen wir spazieren. (Although it's raining, we're going for a walk.)

Hindi

हालाँकि बारिश हो रही है, हम टहलने जा रहे हैं।

obwohl works exactly like weil or dass: it opens a subordinate clause and pushes the conjugated verb (regnet) all the way to the end of that clause. Hindi's "हालाँकि" doesn't force the verb to the end this strongly, so double-check every obwohl-clause for verb-final placement. obgleich is a more formal synonym following the same rule.

trotzdem: an adverb, not a conjunction — triggers inversion when opening a clause

German

Es regnet. Trotzdem gehen wir spazieren. (It's raining. Nevertheless, we're going for a walk.)

Hindi

बारिश हो रही है। फिर भी, हम टहलने जा रहे हैं।

trotzdem is a single sentence element (an adverb meaning 'despite that'), not a conjunction joining two clauses. When it opens a sentence, it alone fills the first slot, so the verb must come immediately in second position, before the subject: trotzdem gehen wir, not trotzdem wir gehen. Hindi's "फिर भी" never causes this subject-verb inversion, so watch for it every time a sentence opens with trotzdem (or its synonym dennoch).

zwar...aber: conceding a point first, then setting it against something

German

Es regnet zwar, aber wir gehen trotzdem spazieren. (Granted, it's raining, but we're going for a walk anyway.)

Hindi

यह सच है कि बारिश हो रही है, पर हम फिर भी टहलने जा रहे हैं।

zwar signals 'yes, this is true' and usually sits right after the conjugated verb in its clause (regnet zwar), not at the very front; aber then opens the contrasting main clause. This matches Hindi's "यह सच है कि...पर" exactly in spirit — conceding a fact first, then pivoting to the more important point.
