Trends & Statistics Vocabulary
रुझान और आँकड़ों की शब्दावली
Talking about surveys, majorities, and general trends rests on quantity nouns that combine with the genitive or a von-phrase — plus one extremely common preposition, laut, that many learners misuse.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
Quantity nouns combine with the genitive or a von + dative phrase
die Mehrheit der Befragten / die Mehrheit von ihnen (the majority of those surveyed / the majority of them)
सर्वेक्षण किए गए लोगों का बहुमत / उनमें से बहुमत
die Mehrheit, die Minderheit, and similar quantity nouns take a genitive noun phrase to say 'the majority of X' (die Mehrheit der Befragten) — much like Hindi's "...का बहुमत". But when the following word is a pronoun or the genitive would sound clunky, they switch to von + dative (die Mehrheit von ihnen, not die Mehrheit ihrer). This reflects a broader German pattern: genitive constructions are gradually being replaced by von + dative exactly where the genitive feels most cumbersome.
laut is a citation preposition, often used with the dative in practice
Laut einer Studie steigen die Zahlen. (According to a study, the numbers are rising.)
एक अध्ययन के अनुसार, संख्याएँ बढ़ रही हैं।
laut ('according to', much like a Hindi postposition) technically allows either the genitive or the dative, but in practice the dative is what you'll hear and read most often (laut einer Studie, laut den Experten). Also notice that laut, like any single-word preposition phrase placed in the first slot, comes directly before the verb: Laut einer Studie steigen die Zahlen, not Laut einer Studie die Zahlen steigen.
