Lesson 13A1

Food & Ordering

ಆಹಾರ ಮತ್ತು ಆರ್ಡರ್ ಮಾಡುವುದು

Ordering food is where the accusative case, articles, and polite requests all come together in one practical, everyday skill.

Grammar Comparison

ವ್ಯಾಕರಣ ಹೋಲಿಕೆ

möchte + accusative — the polite request pattern

German

Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte. (ein → einen, accusative masculine, after möchte)

Kannada

ನನಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾಫಿ ಬೇಕು, ದಯವಿಟ್ಟು. (possession-style request, no visible case change on 'ಕಾಫಿ')

Both languages build polite requests around 'I would like,' but the mechanics differ: Kannada's ನನಗೆ... ಬೇಕು ('to me... is wanted') frames the request as possession, with no case marking visible on the noun itself. German's Ich möchte behaves like an ordinary verb taking a direct object, so the noun phrase after it must be in the accusative — which is exactly why ein Kaffee becomes einen Kaffee the moment you're ordering one.
