Lesson 34B1

Double Conjunctions

ഇരട്ട സംയോജക പദങ്ങൾ

German pairs conjunctions together — sowohl...als auch, entweder...oder, weder...noch — to link two ideas in one breath, echoing Malayalam's own paired correlative structures.

Grammar Comparison

വ്യാകരണ താരതമ്യം

Paired conjunctions on both sides

German

Ich spreche sowohl Deutsch als auch Malayalam. (I speak both German and Malayalam)

Malayalam

ഞാൻ ജർമ്മനും മലയാളവും സംസാരിക്കും. (both words take the same suffix -ഉം)

Malayalam links two equal items by attaching -ഉം ('also/and') to each one in turn — ജർമ്മനും മലയാളവും, literally 'German-also Malayalam-also'. German instead frames the pair with two separate words, one before each item: sowohl before the first, als auch before the second. Different mechanism — a repeated suffix vs. a bracketing pair of words — but the underlying instinct, marking both sides of a pairing rather than just one, is something Malayalam speakers already do automatically.
