Konjunktiv II: Hypotheticals & Polite Requests

நிபந்தனை வாக்கியங்கள் (-ால்)

würde, hätte, wäre, könnte — German's subjunctive mood for wishes, hypotheticals, and politeness — line up with Tamil's own conditional suffix -ால்.

Grammar Comparison

இலக்கண ஒப்பீடு

würde/hätte/wäre ≈ Tamil's -ால் conditional

German

Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen. (If I had time, I would come)

Tamil

எனக்கு நேரம் இருந்தால், நான் வருவேன். (time-if-existed, I-would-come — -ால் marks the hypothetical)

Tamil builds a hypothetical with a single suffix, -ால் ('if'), attached to the condition verb, while the result clause uses an ordinary future-tense verb. German spreads the same idea across special subjunctive forms: hätte ('would have'), wäre ('would be'), and würde + infinitive ('would [verb]') for the result clause. The overall shape — a conditional clause plus a hypothetical result — matches Tamil closely, even though German marks the hypothetical mood on the verb form itself rather than with a single suffix.

könnte/würde also soften requests, without changing the tense meaning

German

Könnten Sie mir helfen? (Could you help me? — softer than Können Sie...?)

Tamil

நீங்க எனக்கு உதவ முடியுமா? (a question particle/tone softens it, not a separate verb form)

Tamil softens a request mostly through tone, word choice, or an added particle, not by switching the verb's grammatical form. German instead has a genuinely separate verb form (könnte instead of kann) whose entire job is politeness — it doesn't literally mean 'could' in a past sense here, it just signals 'this is a polite version of can'. Expect to memorize könnte/würde as the 'polite register' forms of können/werden, on top of their hypothetical meaning.
