Comparatives & Superlatives

తులనాత్మక మరియు అత్యుత్తమ స్థాయిలు

German builds comparisons by adding a suffix directly onto the adjective (schön → schöner → am schönsten), while Telugu builds them by adding the postposition కంటే ('than') after the thing being compared — different mechanism, same three-step ladder.

Grammar Comparison

వ్యాకరణ పోలిక

Suffix ladder vs. Telugu's postposition కంటే

German

schön (beautiful) → schöner (more beautiful) → am schönsten (most beautiful)

Telugu

అందమైన (beautiful) → దీనికంటే అందమైన ('more beautiful than this') → అన్నిటికంటే అందమైన ('most beautiful of all')

Telugu doesn't change the adjective's form to compare it — instead it adds కంటే ('than') right after the noun being compared (దీనికంటే, 'than this'; అన్నిటికంటే, 'than everything'), while the adjective itself, అందమైన, stays exactly the same in every position on the ladder. German changes the adjective's ending instead: -er for the comparative, am + -sten for the superlative, often with an umlaut added on short adjectives (alt → älter → am ältesten). Both systems build the same clear three-step ladder — big, bigger, biggest — just with the change happening in a different place: on the postposition-marked noun in Telugu, on the adjective itself in German.
