Genitive Chains

Reading a genitive chain from the outside in

German stacks its genitive chain from the outermost noun (die Untersuchung, 'the investigation') inward, drilling through each layer of 'of' until it reaches the innermost possessor (der Stadt, 'of the city') at the very end. Telugu builds the identical chain in reverse, exactly as its possessive marker generally works — the oblique stem or యొక్క (yokka, 'of') sits right before the noun it possesses. So the innermost possessor comes first, నగరం యొక్క ('of the city'), then సమస్య యొక్క ('of the problem') nests around it, then కారణాల ('of the causes', an oblique plural) nests around that, and finally పరిశోధన ('investigation') lands at the very end as the head noun. When you hit a long German genitive chain, read it backward — start from the last word and work toward the front — to rebuild it in the order your Telugu instinct already expects.
