Technology Vocabulary

Technology Vocabulary

Modern technology words are some of the most predictable vocabulary in Spanish — many are borrowed almost directly from English, with just a spelling and pronunciation adjustment.

Many tech words are recognizable borrowings

Spanish

el internet, la computadora/el ordenador, el email/el correo electrónico

English

internet, computer, email — the source words themselves

Because much of modern computing terminology spread globally from English, a large share of Spanish tech vocabulary is either borrowed outright or built from a direct translation — a genuine shortcut compared to the vocabulary you've had to memorize from scratch elsewhere in this course. Watch for false friends, though: not every tech word follows this pattern.

Computadora (Latin America) vs. ordenador (Spain)

Spanish

la computadora / el ordenador — same meaning, different region, and different gender

English

the computer — one word everywhere

This is a good first taste of regional Spanish vocabulary variation, a topic you'll cover in more depth later: Latin America generally says la computadora, while Spain says el ordenador — same object, different word, and even a different grammatical gender. Neither is 'more correct'; they're regional standards.
