Lesson 9A1

Numbers 11–100

संख्याएँ ११–१००

Spanish numbers stay irregular from eleven to fifteen, then turn into visible compounds from sixteen onward — while Hindi keeps a distinct, largely unpredictable word for almost every number from eleven to ninety-nine, with barely a visible pattern to lean on.

Grammar Comparison

व्याकरण तुलना

Once–quince: five irregular words — but Spanish is still far more regular than Hindi overall

Spanish

once (11), doce (12), trece (13), catorce (14), quince (15)

Hindi

ग्यारह, बारह, तेरह, चौदह, पंद्रह (11–15, हर एक का अपना ही रूप)

Spanish once through quince don't visibly contain diez ('ten') — they're a leftover set of standalone words you simply have to memorize. Hindi's ग्यारह through पंद्रह are just as irregular, but that pattern of one-off, unpredictable words continues in Hindi all the way to ninety-nine, while Spanish becomes fully regular again just five numbers later.

dieciséis onward: a single fused compound, more regular than Hindi's equivalents

Spanish

dieciséis (16 = diez + y + seis, 'ten and six'), veintiuno (21 = veinte + y + uno, 'twenty and one')

Hindi

सोलह, इक्कीस — हिंदी में भी इनका अपना अलग रूप है

From 16 onward, Spanish fuses diez y seis into dieciséis, one predictable written word, and this compounding logic continues cleanly through 29 (veintidós, veintitrés...). Hindi, by contrast, gives सोलह (16) and इक्कीस (21) each their own largely unpredictable form, with no shared visible 'ten-plus-unit' pattern the way Spanish has — so from this point on, Spanish numbers are actually easier to predict than Hindi's.

Tens words from 30 onward stay separate, joined by y

Spanish

treinta y uno (31), cuarenta y dos (42) — three separate words

Hindi

इकतीस, बयालीस — हिंदी में भी हर संख्या का अपना शब्द

From 30 up, Spanish tens and units stay as separate words joined by y — treinta y uno, cuarenta y dos — a visible, mechanical pattern you can apply to any tens-plus-unit combination. Hindi's इकतीस (31) and बयालीस (42) are each their own memorized word, with no similarly mechanical way to build them from तीस/चालीस plus the unit — so this is one spot where Spanish's system is the more forgiving of the two.
