Modal Verbs
सहायक भाव-क्रियाएँ (Modal Verbs)
Dutch modal verbs like kunnen ('can') and moeten ('must') work similarly to Hindi's सकता/पड़ता constructions, but they send the main verb all the way to the end of the sentence, the same trick German uses.
Grammar Comparison
व्याकरण तुलना
Modal verb in second position, main verb at the very end
Ik kan Nederlands spreken. (I can speak Dutch — spreken goes last)
मैं डच बोल सकता हूँ।
In Hindi's 'बोल सकता हूँ' too, the main verb (बोल) comes before the helper (सकता हूँ) — so the main verb sits near the end of the sentence, a similar feel to Dutch. Dutch splits it slightly differently: the conjugated modal verb (kan) takes the normal verb-second position, while the main verb, in its plain infinitive form, moves all the way to the end of the sentence: Ik kan Nederlands spreken, literally 'I can Dutch speak.' The longer the sentence, the further apart the two halves can drift — but the infinitive always stays at the very end.
Modal verbs are irregular in the singular
ik kan / jij kan / u kunt — but wij kunnen / jullie kunnen / zij kunnen
मैं कर सकता हूँ / तुम कर सकते हो — पर हम कर सकते हैं / तुम लोग कर सकते हैं / वे कर सकते हैं
Modal verbs shift their vowel between singular and plural forms (kunnen → kan in ik/jij) — Hindi's सकना doesn't do this (सकता/सकते only change with gender/number, not the core sound). Each modal verb's singular form has to be memorized (kunnen→kan, moeten→moet, willen→wil, mogen→mag); the plural forms return to a form close to the infinitive.
