Dutch splits negation into two words depending on what's being negated — niet for negating verbs and most other things, geen for negating an indefinite noun — a two-way split that Hindi's single नहीं doesn't make.

niet negates the verb or the sentence in general
Ik werk niet. (I don't work.)
मैं काम नहीं करता।
Hindi places नहीं directly before the verb, in one consistent spot. Dutch's niet is more mobile — it usually lands near the end of the sentence, after the object if there is one, but its main job is simply negating the action: Ik werk niet, Ik zie je niet ('I don't see you').
geen replaces 'a/an' or an unmarked noun entirely
Ik heb geen auto. (I don't have a car — not 'Ik heb niet een auto')
मेरे पास गाड़ी नहीं है।
When you're negating a noun that would otherwise take een ('a/an') or no article at all, Dutch swaps in geen instead of using niet plus een — Ik heb geen auto, never Ik heb niet een auto. Hindi doesn't need this second negative word; नहीं alone covers both cases (मेरे पास गाड़ी नहीं है covers 'I have no car' just as well as negating any other sentence). Getting niet and geen mixed up is one of the most common mistakes Dutch learners make, so it's worth drilling early.
