Im Deutschen richtet sich „dieser“ nach dem grammatischen Geschlecht des Nomens (dieser Mann, diese Frau, dieses Kind), während das Englische mit „this“ und „that“ nur nach Nähe und Numerus unterscheidet, ganz unabhängig vom Genus.

Deutsch bildet Demonstrativpronomen abhängig vom Genus (dieser/diese/dieses). Englisch unterscheidet stattdessen nur danach, ob etwas räumlich nah („this/these“) oder fern („that/those“) ist, und ob es Singular oder Plural ist. Das Genus des Nomens spielt dabei überhaupt keine Rolle – „this“ passt gleichermaßen zu book, woman oder child.
